Breaking out – Newfoundland wins first at Allan Cup

by Dan Carle

Cambridge, ON – The South Shore Breakers went up 2-0 five minutes in and skated to a first win, 4-2, at the Allan Cup Tuesday over previously unbeaten Stoney Creek to set up a host of possibilities leading into the final day of round-robin play.

Forward Ryan Dawson scored the game-winner and his second of the tournament six minutes into the third and goaltender AJ Whiffen stopped 37 shots for the St. John’s-based Breakers, who improved to 1-1 at the four-team men’s senior AAA Championship.

“We were caught a little flat-footed in the beginning,” said Tigers goaltender Daniel Svedin, the 41-year-old Stoney Creek starter and co-owner who finished with 33 saves – and a possible scoring headache for his team in games to come.

The Tigers have lost three top-line players to injuries at the tournament – two with a broken collar bone and another with a broken knee cap.

The Breakers (1-1) play Alberta/Innisfail (0-2) and undefeated host Dundas (2-0) plays Stoney Creek (1-1) in final round-robin games Wednesday.

The winner of the round-robin earns a berth to Saturday’s 3:00 p.m. final.

The semi-final game between the No. 2 and No. 3 round-robin finisher is Friday night.

All games are at JL Grightmire Arena.

“You need to dig in your core and just pull it out,” said Svedin. “This is why we play hockey.”

The Allan Cup is the trophy awarded annually to the senior ice hockey champions of Canada. It was donated by Sir Montagu Allan of Ravenscrag, Montreal, and has been competed for since 1909. The current champions are the Dundas Real McCoys, who captured the 2023 Allan Cup in Dundas, Ontario.
